SFIAAFF leftovers
Okay, I’m behind on posts, so I’m giving up on writing full reviews on the movies I saw last, last Sunday. Here’s some quickies instead:
The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief – Somehow everybody except me didn’t realize it was a documentary, and somehow I was the only one who didn’t know it was about male prostitutes. (Fine with me. Bishounen, bishounen, bishounen!) I really enjoyed this documentary. I’ve never heard of host clubs, and now I know quite a bit about them. Since it’s a documentary, it doesn’t have a plot. However, it still manages twists (instead of plot twists, it’s like… a fact twist?). Favorite thing I saw on Sunday. 8/10
Woman on the Beach – South Korean movie about love triangles. We were going to see American Pastime, but since it’s coming out on DVD in May, we decided to check this out instead. (btw, American Pastime sold out pretty quick and even had a significant rush line… pretty sure that had something to do with all the Japanese Americans in San Jose.) I wish I had seen American Pastime. Jokes too subtle for me. Main guy is a jerk. Very long… very boring. Ending scene makes no sense. Visually okay. 3/10
Year of the Fish – Modern day Cinderella that takes place in NY Chinatown… with rotoscoping. Simple movie, but as a result, not bad. Everybody likes Cinderella stories, right? Rotoscoping is a total gimmick; the movie would have probably been just as good with the same exaggerated colors and no rotoscoping. Ken Leung is not hot and looks retarded playing the accordion. Pretty cute movie. 6/10
