I want more vacation.
My return to work was fairly uneventful, and I don’t think my vacation made me want to do my current project anymore than before my vacation. Luckily (or unluckily), I was distracted by other issues at work, so I got to put it off a bit more. I really need to wrap it up soon, because I think it’s been steadily draining the life out of me for the last several months. Bleh.
For lunch, we went to a pizza place a few blocks down from Valley Fair called A Slice of New York, recommended by one of Bobby’s friends. According to a Yelp reviewer, the owner used to work at Cisco, but then gave up being a tech peon to run a pizza joint. The guy at the register (the owner I think, he was very friendly) said the place had only been open for 10 months, but the place already has like 70-something reviews on Yelp. Word of mouth is pretty crazy. Anyway, the place was really good. Their crust was nice and crispy, and their sauce pretty good. I don’t know why I get the pepperoni slices, because while it seems like a good idea when I order it, it’s too greasy for me to finish their whole thing. And yeah, their pepperoni is super-greasy. They also have something called “Sicilian pizza”, which had a thicker crust, more tomato-y sauce, and was cut in squares. I found this one to be considerably lighter than the pepperoni, and I really liked it. I also got a cannoli which was pretty good, but really heavy.
It’s a total hole-in-the-wall place, which maybe three or four stools to sit on inside and around 7 lawn chairs to sit on outside. And aside from two parking spaces, there’s no parking, so it’s street parking or double/triple parking behind the two parking spaces. Luckily, the weather was decent, so sitting outside was actually nice. Their lunch deal is buy two slices, get a free drink, and they have a sink near the entrance so you can wash your hands after eating their greasy pizza. I think we all liked the place, so it’ll probably be added to our list of regular pizza joints, along with Cicero’s, McHart’s (I <3 McHart’s), and the guys seem to like Pizza My Heart (meh). I’d also like to mention that Pizza Chicago downtown is the best for deep dish, and Amici’s is pretty good thin crust too.
I got bored and wrote a review for Dac Phuc on Yelp. I don’t care to Yelp (which is why I haven’t), but I decided it was an injustice that Dac Phuc got no love. I love their pho. I only gave them 4 stars cuz everything else they serve isn’t that great. But their pho… their pho is good…
I’m still not wearing my engagement ring. I got it back from Willow Glen Diamond Company, who did a very nice job engraving it (and for super-cheap too) and tried to wear it. Within a day, I got blisters in the same area on my finger again. Except now, instead of three bumps, I’ve got like 7-8 :( It hella sucks. I’m going to wait for my finger to heal, try one more thing to make sure it’s not a bacterial infection, and give it another shot before we seriously start considering platinum options. (If you don’t know, platinum is way, way, way more expensive than white gold.)
New thing I learned today: The letter “h” can be spelled out as an actual word. “Aitch” means… the letter “h”.
I went to dinner with Kelvin and his coworkers, and his coworker Geoff mentioned of a girl who got knocked out of the national spelling bee a few years back when asked to spell “aitch”.
MODERATOR Aitch. GIRL Aitch? MODERATOR Aitch. GIRL Like the letter 'h'? MODERATOR Would you like the definition? GIRL Yes, please. MODERATOR The letter 'h'.
rofl. Poor girl.
