March 2009 video game tab

March 31, 2009 By: Judy Category: Shopping, Video Games

Video games and other gaming related purchases:
Xbox Live 1600 points card + free Watchmen movie pack including two free admission – $19.99 at Best Buy
Crysis (PC) – $9.99+tax at Best Buy
Crysis: Warhead (PC) – $9.99+tax at Best Buy
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Premier Edition (PC) – $9.99+tax at Best Buy
Madworld (Wii) – $39.97 at Amazon
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS) – $29.99 at Amazon – Used Amazon credit
Logitech 960 USB headset – $19.99+tax from NewEgg
Civilization Revolution (DS) – $19.99+tax – Kelvin’s impulse buy at Best Buy
Total cost: $145.48 – $29.99 Amazon credit = $115.49 (If I don’t count Kelvin’s purchase I didn’t approve of, it’s $93.85. Unfortunately, his money is my money now… but at least his games are my games too!)

Best Buy had a pretty crazy PC game sale at the beginning of the month, and I was able to find three of the games in the sale at the Best Buy in East Palo Alto. Madworld and GTA:CW were both less-than-retail impulse buys, but I’ve only gotten into GTA:CW. I’m finding it hard to get myself to sit in front of the TV to play games these days. At least GTA:CW is really fun; it’s very reminiscent of the old school GTAs, which I’ve always preferred to the 3D ones.

Games completed:
Starcraft: Brood War (PC)

Man, Brood War seriously sucked up all my time end of February and beginning of March. Too bad it’s the only game I could knock of my list for the month.

New thing I learned today: The film Haunting in Connecticut is based off the real claims of a haunted funeral home in that state. I haven’t seen the film, but Hoang told me so.

Gone for the weekend

March 27, 2009 By: Judy Category: Life

Here’s a hint to where we’ll be this weekend (late Friday to Monday, to be exact):

This drawing was my birthday present to Kelvin back in January. It probably took me more time to crumple the paper up into a ball than to actually draw the thing. The drawing and gift makes more sense when you read my honeymoon in New Zealand posts… whenever I get to those.

Despite all the things I have to do, blog posts included, I still manage to waste time playing games with no end and watching television. My last week was pretty much devoted to the first season of Dexter, which we just finished last night. Great show, awesome plot/story for the first season. It’s so rare to have a show or movie with a satisfying ending. I’m really curious to see if they can avoid the only-the-first-season-is-good problem a lot of potentially-great shows have. Other than that, it’s been mainly internet surfing, internet shopping, and occasionally some TF2. I got GTA: Chinatown Wars in the mail earlier this week; I’m super excited to play it.

Now for some randomness from the last couple weeks… Hana turned a year old a couple weeks ago, and it was Kelvin’s dad’s birthday a couple weeks later, so there was a family birthday get-together for both.

Hana opening presents with her mom and sister. Naomi was more than happy to help Hana open stuff. In this pic, they’re looking at the matching dresses their mom got them.

Kelvin had many “restrictions” for his dad’s gift, but I convinced him to get him an iTunes gift card. While we were at Toys’R'Us getting Hana’s gift, we saw some Obama trading cards and gave him a pack of those as well. Kelvin saw a birthday card full of knock-knock jokes for an 8 year-old; we got it and Kelvin stuck an 6 in front of the 8 and voila! A birthday card for a 68 year old! His dad seemed to dig the stuff we gave him, so yay.

Another year, another Daffodil Days. Along with the 20 flowers I bought, my boss gave me another 5. The vase was pretty crowded and not all the flowers bloomed at the same time. I’m not the biggest fan of flowers (it makes me a little sad when they wilt), but it’s nice to get/give flowers while supporting cancer research. It also gives me a moment to think about my aunt; she passed away from breast cancer in 2005. Looking at my past blog posts, I don’t donate as much as I used to. I should fix that. Protesting bear is still protesting, just not during Daffodil Days (he didn’t take a break last year). He’s gotten our group many donuts and bagels the last couple years!

My tire got a flat last Thursday. It probably had something to with the branch I ran over on 85 on the way to SFO the night before, dropping my mom off for her trip. My Prius had some freaky transaxle error message that Thursday morning, but it went away so I ignored it. Later that day, Mike told me at work that he saw my car had a flat. I wonder if I drove on it; I can’t believe I didn’t notice the flat if I did. Ted helped me change the tire to the donut (which is offensively and embarrassingly bright yellow). I drove on it a couple days, but now I’m leaving it in the parking lot at work while I wait for Costco tires to be delivered. I’m taking my mom’s car in the meantime and letting everyone at the office think I work 24/7 or live in my cube. I hope security doesn’t tow my car.

New thing I learned today: How to change a flat tire on a car. Thanks Ted!

I have watched the Watchmen

March 25, 2009 By: Judy Category: Movies, Reviews

Last week, I used up my freebie Watchmen tickets with Ted, since Kelvin saw the movie on opening day with his coworkers. It was kind of nice to watch it over a week after opening day on a weeknight. Space in the theater was plentiful, and only a handful of people meant we probably weren’t going to have annoying people with us, which was the case (thank goodness). We both chowed down on super nachos and giant Icees, so the theater basically made its ticket money off us anyway.

The movie was pretty decent. I read the graphic novel before (if you haven’t come borrow my copy!), and I felt the movie was good truncation of the graphic novel. There’s no way they could have put all the stuff from the book into a movie, and they picked and chose their scenes well. I also approve of most of the changes they decided to do. The ending, in particular, was probably a lot more palatable for general audiences than the book ending, yet the movie ending still made the same point as the book. I liked most of the casting, with the exception of Adrian Veidt; I don’t get what his inconsistent accent was supposed be. I am SO glad they didn’t mess up casting for Rorschach. Rorschach was the best character in the book, and he was definitely the best character in the movie. Jackie Earle Haley rocked the role. Like 300, the movie is visually spectacular.

It’s not perfect tho. Laurie’s character is underdeveloped compared to the graphic novel, so when her personal conflicts come to a turning point, it’s not particularly compelling. Dr. Manhattan’s CG weirded me out, but maybe that’s intentional. Veidt’s cat definitely didn’t look right. The movie was more graphic than the book, both in violence and sex. And speaking of sex, WHAT A TERRIBLE SEX SCENE. Unnecessarily long, awkward, and what the f*ck was with the background music?

Is this song better porn music or intimate love scene music? The answer is: IT SUCKS EQUALLY FOR BOTH. I don’t know what emotions Zack Snyder is trying to convey. Passion? Love? Sadness? They’re going at it like horny rabbits with this somber music in the background. IT MAKES NO SENSE. The sex scene was also my biggest beef in 300, so I’m guessing “crappy sex scene” is a Zack Snyder signature. Kelvin suspects that he’s watched too many Showtime softcore pornos.

Anyway, I still feel the book is better, just because it goes into things in so much detail. The movie was a good summary of the book, with some changes that I preferred over what was in the book. I give it an 8 outta 10.

New thing I learned today: Those inkblot tests are called Rorschach tests. (Okay, I didn’t learn this today; I learned about it when I read the book, but whatever.) The Rorschach test uses a set of 10 inkblot images, always the same 10 images and always in the same order.

Honeymoon Day 3 – More snorkeling and napping

March 22, 2009 By: Judy Category: Travel

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

On the morning of the third day, we were awakened very early by a guy from the staff opening our bure door. The worker apologized profusely and promptly left, leaving our groggy and confused selves to immediately pass out again. We were too tired to think much of it. Later in the day, a stern looking fellow dropped by our bure as we were lounging about. Based on his expression, I thought we might have been in trouble for something. It turned out he’s the person in charge of refilling the minibars. One of our neighbors went fishing very early, and he was given the wrong bure number to service, hence the intrusion in the morning. He gave a very sincere apology, and while I probably would have forgotten about, it was professional of them to do so and certainly appreciated.

Like the day before, we headed straight to the dining area for breakfast once we woke up. Upon careful reading of the breakfast menu, I noticed that pancakes are available upon request and included as part of the continental breakfast. Kelvin tried those out (he was meh on them cuz they were a little sweet for him), while I stuck with the scrambled eggs, which they season lightly with basil and tomato… kinda like a scrambled eggs margherita :P The morning activity listed on the board was another snorkeling trip, which we were interested in. We lounged on the daybed of the bure until 10:30AM, and Mia and Tofu (another resort doggie) joined us for most of the morning.

Kelvin and his pancakes

Me on the daybed

Tofu makes himself comfortable. Kelvin didn’t want any of the dogs in the bure, and
he was able to shoo away Olivia and Mia no problem. Tofu is quite insistent tho; he
made it in on this day and the afternoon before.

Today’s snorkeling trip was to the “Blue Lagoon”, and I’m guessing that means the beach was where the movie “Blue Lagoon” was filmed. Our ride this time would be a motorized fishing boat, and we were joined by an English couple and the guy of one of the couples we met the day before. Before getting on the boat, we were given the same masks and flippers we used the day before, along with fresh towels.

Seruvi pushes the boat out to sea

This trip was more like what I expected the day before: you start off on a beach and swim out to your snorkeling destination. Seruvi took us to a narrow beach lined by trees. As soon as we got onto the beach, a LOUD roar boomed from behind the trees. It sounded like there was some sort of monster. Seruvi mentioned that a resort owns this area, and it was probably boars or something. And it certainly smelled like it, cuz there was a strong and nauseating smell of animal poo in the vicinity of the scary animal sounds. We stayed away from the smell, quickly put on our snorkel gear, and swam out into the ocean.

Putting on my gear

I had some initial trouble with my tube, as I kept breathing in saltwater and coughing it out. After Kelvin helped me adjust it, I was off swimming. After the day before, this snorkeling trip was a lot less intimidating, and I was completely at ease with the whole snorkeling concept. It probably helped that we stayed pretty close to the shore, so it was never that deep, but we did venture out a ways at times. I saw more fish this time, or maybe I just noticed more because I was more relaxed and observant. I was even able to take some pictures, though I didn’t notice I had accidentally zoomed in all the way, creating many terrible pictures.

An example of my skillful photography

Our bling underwater. I always made sure to take off
my engagement ring before going swimming.

Fiji isn’t hot and steamy, it’s just the camera lense

Kelvin sittin’ in a tree, giant monster boar lurking somewhere behind him

Nothing exceptional worth noting for this trip (another swimmer said he went to deeper waters and saw a ray), but it was fun to go snorkeling again. The water seemed cooler than the day before, but it was still comfortable. We swam around for a good hour before all the swimmers unanimously decided it was time to go.

Sean enjoys the trip back with us

Once we got back, it was time for lunch. We quickly changed into some dry clothes and went to the restaurant for food. I had a tasty club sandwich, while Kelvin had fish and chips.

Kelvin and his lunch

IIRC, the afternoon activity was hiking to scenic points on the island we’re staying on. Kelvin and I are not into hiking, so we passed on this activity. Instead, we scheduled time for the daily spa special, which was the Bobo massage. Kelvin originally didn’t want to do it; he didn’t want strangers touching him and greasing him up again. I convinced him last second to join me. We went to the spa bure at the scheduled time, but the spa lady’s assistant wasn’t readily available since they were only expecting one person, so Kelvin had to wait 10-15 min for her to get there and start his massage. I had the main spa lady again, and the massage was very relaxing, as expected. Kelvin still didn’t like it, and he didn’t even get a full hour of massage. After the massage, we showered to wash all the massage oils off and napped until dinnertime.

The restaurant wasn’t open yet when we got there, so we went to the bar where the Australian couple was hanging out. The English-moved-to-Australia couple joined us later on. We had some nice chit-chat, but I of course cannot remember any of their names. (I know the Australian guy works in the music industry… that’s about all I remember!) The bar provided nice snacks with our beverages, including chips, fresh coconut slices, and cooked coconut slices.

Bar snacks

For dinner, I opted for the seared tuna, which looked and tasted really good. Kelvin went for the fish ravioli. I don’t remember his opinion of it. The meals at Navutu Stars are very filling. I’m pretty sure I never finished any of my dinners there. They offer meal plans from 100FJD per person for lunch and dinner, but I remember reading Tripadvisor reviews that these meals were always overkill (as in way more than you need). The most we both ever spent on food in one day (not including beverages which aren’t in meal plans anyway, I think) for both lunch and dinner was 138FJD on our 4th day on honeymoon (the day after this one), which included one appetizer and one dessert.

My seared tuna was very delicious, but I couldn’t finish it!

Kelvin needs to take a digestive aid for is lactose issues whenever he eats anything
with dairy, which is pretty much whenever he eats anything

After dinner was more LOTR watching (I think we made it to Two Towers at this point) and then bedtime. Since evenings yield nothing interesting, I’ll share a quick note from Day 2 I forgot to talk about. Before we switched bures, Kelvin made an freaky discovery in our original bure, and he didn’t want to tell me about it cuz I’d freak out. Yet he still told me he knew something just so I could be annoyed with my own curiosity. Once he assured me it wasn’t spider related, I insisted he tell me, which he did. Apparently, on the wall where the patio doors are hinged, he found a squashed lizard close to the ceiling. There’s lizards running around the island all the time, and I guess this one was unfortunate to be on this spot on the wall as a previous guest opened the patio door and subsequently squashed him between the door and wall. And this happened a while ago, as the lizard was now this skeletal thing with some leftover dry skin and muscle attached, still in its death cling to the wall. Not horrific, but a little startling if you happen to look the wrong way by the minibar. Kelvin had a mini-dilemma about telling the cleaning lady, but he eventually did when we switched bures. I remember a combination gasp/shriek from her when she saw it, and I’m pretty sure she promptly told some cleaning dude to take care of it soon after. It was morbidly amusing. It kind of reminds me of the squirrel that died hanging by its teeth from a powerline next to my high school, shrinking into a dried up mass as the months passed but kept hanging on. ANYWAYS…

Note I’m sure nobody cares about: The thing that takes me the longest in making these posts is organizing the photos for the posts. I usually have to mess with timestamps to have my photos be chronologically in sync with Kelvin’s. For this day of the honeymoon, there’s an hour discrepancy somewhere I can’t figure out, so it’s possible some of the photos in the gallery may be off an hour.

Previously, Honeymoon Day 2 – My first time snorkeling… EVER
Next, Honeymoon Day 4 – Spear-fishing, cave-snorkeling, and kava-drinking

New thing I learned today: The Blue Lagoon is located on the west side of the island Nanuya LaiLai.

I <3 my new Fossil purse

March 15, 2009 By: Judy Category: Shopping

The purse I got back in July has been holding up just fine, but I’m finding I don’t deal well with satchels with open compartments. I tend to toss my purse around, and stuff is constantly falling out of the non-zippered compartments. The magnetic clips can’t keep in all the crap I carry around. Plus, it’s been raining cats and dogs in the Silicon Valley, and I’m finding my stuff is getting wet. I decided it was time to upgrade my bag.

This time around, I decided to try out a “name-brand” bag. No Coach or Louis Vuitton; my cheap-ass wallet can’t handle those prices. I’d decided to go for something more moderate: between $100 and $200. I shopped online to avoid paying sales tax… and I’m too lazy to physically go into a store. Looking at different bags, I found myself drawn to Fossil styles. They look attractive, but not flashy, and they’re very practically designed. I love pockets and compartments, and some of their bags have plenty of them.

Looking around, eBags seems to be the cheapest option, with no tax and (currently) free shipping on $75+ orders. Zappos was another place with free shipping and no tax, but they compensate by being a few bucks more expensive. Both offer free returns, but eBags has a price guarantee in addition to being cheaper. I had my eye on two bags: the Castille Traveler by Fossil and the Stash Bag by Lucky. I decided against the latter one because it looked kinda big for me, but the Fossil one looked kind of small. I ordered two other satchel-type Fossil bags in case the one I liked turned out too small to carry all my stuff.

Picture yoinked from Zappos

I got my bags last week, and I immediately was drawn to my original pick. It was bigger than I had thought, and it managed to fit all my stuff in. One of the other bags my mom liked, so I’m giving it to her, and the other I gotta send back to return. It’s only been a week, but I LOVE my bag. LOVE it. I have been gushing about it to anybody who will listen to me. It’s got so much utility and looks great. A summary:

Pros:
- Front flap pocket for fast and easy access to items
- Cell phone and zip pocket in the main, zipper compartment
- Back wallet compartment thingy with lots of sections and card slots, and this compartment rests against the body so harder for thieves to access or notice
- Fits all my essentials (wallet, keys, phone) and then some (DS or PSP, digital camera, notebook/pen, compact, mini-brush, tissues, chapstick, feminine products, coupons, gift cards, badges… and the list goes on)
- No open compartments so nothing falls out when I toss it around
- Crossbody length strap. Purse straps always slip off my shoulders, and having a crossbody makes it way more secure since it can go around my neck
- Adjustable strap, so can be crossbody, shoulder, or hand carried
- Good size for me, not huge
- Clean, simple, non-flashy look. Another thing about it being crossbody: I love the look of a purse against the hip.
- Made of leather, so supposedly more durable, flexible, natural. Smells like dead cow, mmmmMmmm!

Cons:
- Can barely put anything else in my purse now, because it just fits all my crap. I wish it were a touch bigger, but I’m thinking I’m just going to look for a smaller wallet, now that I can put all my gift cards outside of my wallet.
- Made of leather – it’s already getting scuffs and marks on it, and I’m pretty sure it’ll eventually stain.
- Can’t use my purse hook anymore because the strap is so long. There’s no way I’m going to readjust my strap every time I sit down in a restaurant, especially since the strap is thick leather and is a bitch to adjust. Right now I tie a loose knot in the strap to hang it, but I might add a short strap to the purse just for using with the purse hook.
- No good compartment for holding DS or PSP. It’s in the front flap compartment right now. Because of how stuffed my purse is, I’m getting this rectangular imprint on my flap pocket from my DS. I want to put it in the main compartment, but it’ll get scratched up from all the other junk I put in there. I’m thinking I’ll have to sew a sleeve for it so I can put it in the main pocket and use the flap pocket for easy access to cell phone and keys.
- Zipper usually needs two hands to zip it up, especially if you zip it all the way open

New purse in action!

Before, I would have scoffed at the idea of paying $118 for a purse. Even with my loosening my frugality for my new purse, the price still made me a little antsy. Now, I have zero regrets, because I’m 100% convinced I got my money’s worth. Now I’ve just got to see how long this purse can handle the massive amount of junk I carry around.

New thing I learned today: Sometimes leather is tanned using animal brains, and the process is called brain tanning.
